Baseball's Season Comes to a Close

May 16, 2012

Following a tough loss in the second round of the district playoffs, the Eagles are looking forward to next year after being knocked out of the tournament by defending champion Cheyenne Mountain.

In the first game of the four team district pool, the Eagles squared off against the Roosevelt Rough Riders for the second time this season.

The goal that Coach Keith Wahl laid out for the playoffs was to “overwhelm the opposition with runs” and the Eagles did just that in what was for the majority of the team, their first playoff game. The offense ignited for 13 runs, with 11 coming in a monster fourth inning, to beat the Rough Riders in five innings. Daniel Lund, Greg Popylisen, Jake Merrick and Marco Castilla all went deep for the Eagles in an astounding 4 home run game. Matt Fontneau shined on the mound, carrying a no-hitter into the final inning in his first varsity start, and coming away with the win, 13-1.

The Eagles would carry their hot bats into the start of their next game, which started against Cheyenne Mountain a mere 45 minutes after the final out of the Roosevelt game. Daniel Lund took the first pitch of the game from Indians ace Brett Helton over the right center field wall, his second home-run in as many at-bats, and ignited a 4 run first inning. However, after the first, the Eagles couldn’t find an answer for Helton, and Cheyenne Mountain’s offense chipped away off of Whalen and Daniel Butler, before eventually taking an 8-4 lead that would hold until the end of the game.
