2011-2012 Season Summary

March 13, 2012

The 2011-12 Valor Girls Swim team was one that has faced the initial challenge of transition and change with the loss of 6 seniors on an 18 member team and the loss of two other athletes. These losses, coupled with the blessing of 10 new athletes, meant there would be a completely new look and attitude to the team. The team took on this challenge as well as the best that Jeffco could provide, with great expectation and excitement. The first meet of the season was against Wheat Ridge, who Valor beat soundly last year and at the Jeffco league meet. This year was exactly the opposite, as Wheat Ridge handed Valor a 162-109 loss. The girls realized that this was going to be a very challenging season because of the strength of future opponents beyond that of Wheat Ridge. Over the next four dual meets, Valor only secured a victory in one meet against Arvada. In spite of the losses, the one trend that continued was the individual improvements from week to week. This gave the team some hope as they drew closer to the 4A Jeffco League and 4A State Championships. The improvement in performances over the first 10 weeks gave the team a lot of hope at the league meet and they turned that hope into points – 246.5 of them to be exact! While this point total wasn’t quite competitive enough with 4A top 5 teams D’Evelyn and Evergreen, Valor was extremely competitive with every other 4A Jeffco team as they took home 3rd place to pair with their 3rd place finish last year! They managed to wrestle that 3rd place finish from Wheat Ridge, the very same team that beat Valor in the first dual meet of the season!

At the 4A State Championships, Valor found themselves going into the meet with 3 individual event qualifiers in Claire Stouffer (100 Backstroke), Megan Turner (100 Backstroke) and Katie Walker (200 Freestyle, 100 Butterfly) and all 3 relays – 200 Medley Relay (Megan Turner, Claire Stouffer, Katie Walker, Courtney Camden), 200 Freestyle Relay (Alex Nelson, Courtney Camden, Meg Macdonald, Rachel Pomeroy), and 400 Freestyle Relay (Meg Macdonald, Katie Walker, Courtney Camden, Megan Turner). In every one of these swims, the Eagles were seeded in the mid-twenties and low thirties and in most every case, they moved up – way up! They just missed scoring points in the Top-16, with many 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th places and all but one swim being a lifetime best time. With Valor graduating just two seniors, the next few years look to be something to look forward to!
